Let’s talk scale
Four tonnes of fibre are produced every second globally. To help you visualise: That’s approximately four giraffes* worth of fibres every second. Or 354,600 giraffes every day.
*Giraffes weigh between 800 and 1200kg, so, for simplicity’s sake, we’ll round this out to 1000kg or 1 metric ton.
Hot off the press
We know this because the Textile Exchange released its 2025 Materials Market Report on 18 September. This annual report tracks global fibre production – the foundation for understanding textile sustainability progress.
Think of it like the industry’s report card. We’ve read through it, so you don’t have to.
Where do all these giraffes go?
The report tracks fibres produced, regardless of end use:
- 2 giraffes per second → clothing
- 1 giraffe per second → home textiles
- The rest → medical products, industrial uses, footwear, etc.
More, more, more
Fibre production has grown year after year – more than doubling since 2000.
2000: 58 million tonnes
2024: 125 million tonnes
2025: 132 million tonnes
2030: 169 million tonnes (estimate)

The polyester takeover
Most of this growth comes from polyester.
- 59% of global fibre production in 2024 was polyester
- 88% of global fibre production is fossil-fuel-based
Polyester production keeps growing, along with more and more carbon emissions.
Recycling reality check
- Only 7.6% of fibre production was from recycled sources
- Most recycled fibres are polyester from plastic bottles – not old clothes
We’re mostly still stuck in a take-make-waste system.
Silver linings
Not all news is doom and gloom:
- 90% of South African mohair was certified under the Responsible Mohair Standard
- 34% of global cotton comes from certified sources
- Reports like this show us what we need to work on
We’re producing more textiles than ever, mostly from fossil fuels with minimal recycling. The scale is staggering. 354,600 giraffes every day!
But reports like this are essential for tracking progress and holding the industry accountable.
