Katush, a fashion brand based in Nairobi, Kenya presents its SS25 collection, a tribute to creative director Katungulu Mwendwa’s hometown where her love for craftsmanship was first sparked in her grandmother’s workshop.
This collection weaves together memories of long weekends spent with family, experimenting with clay and weaving in Kitui, a town 185 kilometres east of Nairobi. This was a formative time and along with the local wisdom that “the future of the world depends on building strong communities” shaped Katungulu’s creative journey.
Katush pays homage to these roots. Drawing from an old Kamba folktale documented in the 1930s by Gerhard Lindblom, the collection explores the complex relationship between the guinea fowl and the chicken. It recounts how the once-close friendship between the two birds soured when the chicken deceived the guinea fowl by concealing the advantages of domestication and life with human beings.Through playful volumes, soft rounded structures, and feminine forms, Katungulu reimagines these nostalgic tales in vibrant colours and patterns.
Locally sourced cotton, handwoven and milled in East Africa, forms the foundation of the collection, complemented by artisanal crafted claw accessories in gold-plated brass, adding a bold edge.
