With a four-day programme of events, BIRKENSTOCK is set to take over The Ladder Café on Bree Street. Opening on the First Thursday of December, the event combines music, food, art and shopping, adding to the fun and community feeling of Cape Town’s favourite inner city street.
This is more than a takeover. It’s a transformation of one of the Mother City’s favourite cafés, “into a sensory hub where fashion, food and storytelling converge.”
It also gives us an opportunity to celebrate a brand that has been making shoes for 250 years.
BIRKENSTOCK is a global brand which embraces all consumers regardless of geography, gender, age and income and which is committed to a clear purpose – maintaining foot health. Deeply rooted in studies of the biomechanics of the human foot and footed on a family tradition of shoemaking that can be traced back to 1774.
Over the centuries, the German legacy sandals have been worn for function, often by professionals who need to be on their feet for hours. Think doctors, nurses and chefs. Then, subcultures started appreciating their unique design value. Now, the sandals are a fashion staple reflecting a deep respect for their comfort, quality and durability. They are seen on runways, printed in magazines and worn by those in the fashion world.
Everyone who has owned a pair of BIRKENSTOCKs knows how suitable they are for Cape Town summers – yes, they are durable enough for not just one but several summers.

The BIRKENSTOCK Programme
4 December 2025: First Thursday Launch (5pm – 10pm)
The programme is set to kick off with a First Thursday launch on the 4th of December. DJ Brownpepperann will be on the decks with a playlist that mirrors the creative energy of the venue: part coffee shop, part gallery and part creative studio.
There will be a curated pop-up store and a complimentary tote bag gift with all BIRKENSTOCK purchases. On top of that, a laser-etching station will allow guests to personalise their own pair of BIRKENSTOCKs – old or new.
Artisanal ice cream created by Studio H, accented with hints of blue, will be available throughout. Guests who arrive wearing their Birkenstock sandals can enjoy this treat on the house throughout the duration of the takeover. Also available from Thursday until Sunday is a signature BIRKENSTOCK menu item, a freshly baked brezel (soft pretzel) with whipped herb butter, another menu exclusive created just for the occasion.
5 December 2025 (7am – 10am; 12pm – 4pm) | 6 December 2025 (8am – 10am)
On Friday and Saturday, The Ladder Café remains open for visitors to explore the shoppable corner and BIRKENSTOCK’s summer silhouettes, as well as fashion collaborations and interactive moments.
7 December 2025: Bree Street Sunday (11am – 5pm)
The programme concludes with a Bree Street Sunday open-air experience in collaboration with Young Urbanists. Acoustic live music by Majozi will fill the air as guests enjoy street games, brand installations and community-focused interactions.
Additional food highlights will be featured on the final day, including a Studio H gourmet hot dog pop-up, which will showcase German sausages and South African condiments. Guests wearing their BIRKENSTOCK can enjoy a complimentary hot dog, available at the corner of Shortmarket and Bree Street, for one day only.
