There’s a new kid on the block in the heart of Braamfontein – a curated, multi-label Johannesburg design store at 99 Juta Street. After a two-year journey 99 Design opened at the beginning of September to spotlight emerging designers.
“99 Juta is a candy-coloured cultural hub in the centre of busy Joburg. It is a space where students, tourists, and creatives come to hang out in the inner city whether it be to grab a coffee from Abstract Coffee Club, to shop at the store, or to work in our co-working space,” says Tayla Foong, co-founder of 99 Design. They also host regular events in the space.
Co-founded by Tayla Foong of Dear Friends and Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin from Dokter and Misses, the concept store is home to some of South Africa’s finest fashion, décor, and art. The space features 19 local designers, including Asa Sadan, UNKNWNPROJCTS, and Afrogrunge.
Tayla says the space was born out of her love for curating events and hosting people – which sadly had to be put on hold during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the end of 2020, she started connecting with designers and introducing a featured designer to their monthly “That’s Nice!” event. The event was a space for creative entrepreneurs, freelancers, and taste-makers to mix, mingle, ideate, and celebrate.
“After two years of meeting and interacting with various designers and hearing their stories about how they needed a space to belong to, we decided to take the leap and start 99 Design. It is a space our designer friends call home, and where they can showcase their craft,” says Tayla.
Before the pandemic, the 99 Juta Street building was home to local furniture brands. But many have moved to the furniture district in Kramerville. Now, the building has taken on a new life and become a hub for dynamic, boundary-pushing young brands and creative entrepreneurs. 99 Design is here to take this vision to the next level.
