We are in a golden age of South African fashion. In recent years, multiple South African fashion designers have been internationally-recognised for their invaluable contributions to the worlds of innovation, luxury, storytelling, and style. Aside from global accolades, what unites these designers is a common sense of belonging – and a common home.
From the 16th to the 20th of November 2022, The Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, will host a five-day fashion homecoming celebration like no other with 5 of South Africa’s most renowned designers – Thebe Magugu, Sindiso Khumalo, Lezanne Viviers of VIVIERS Studio, Laduma Ngxokolo of MAXHOSA AFRICA, and Maxwell Boko and Mmuso Potsane of MMUSOMAXWELL. The Mount Nelson Presents CONFECTIONS x COLLECTIONS curated by Twyg: A fashion-infused celebration of creativity, culture – and cake.
Space is limited for the afternoon teas and unique fashion shows presented by our internationally recognised designers. Reserve your table soon via restaurantreservations.mnh@belmond.com or call +27 21 483 1000. Tickets sell for R950 per person.
Thebe Magugu and Sindiso Khumalo have both been recognised for their remarkable homages to heritage and history, and are both LVMH Prize winners. While MMUSOMAXWELL’s expert tailoring and delicate explorations with wool led them to win the Karl Lagerfeld Award from the International Woolmark Prize 2022. VIVIERS Studio’s articulates individuality with sartorial elegance. VIVIERS Studio and MMUSOMAXWELL presented their Spring Summer 2023 collections at Milan Fashion Week in September. MAXHOSA AFRICA’s fashion-forward ode to Xhosa culture won them the African Luxury Heritage Brand of the Year 2021 award during Paris Fashion Week.
Beyond being a visually and sonically immersive fashion experience, this intimate five-day series of high teas, will also tantalise your tastebuds. To coincide with the event, Mount Nelson will introduce its re-imagined afternoon tea offering. Pastry chef Vicky Gurovic will present a new afternoon tea menu featuring a selection of cakes, tarts, and loaves – a mix of classic local treats and a few surprise gateaux. A barista station will serve single, origin African coffee beans. A digestif cart will offer aged Glenmorangie single malt and Hennessy cognac.
Sticking to the theme of fashion infusion, Chef Vicky is collaborating with each of the five designers to create a bespoke delicacy for each of the fashion showcases. For their day, the menu will also offer a unique cocktail designed by the designer. This exclusive offering is a peek into the designers’ lesser-known gourmet tastes.
Each day – with two tea seatings at 12:00 and 15:00 – will be dedicated to one designer’s collection with Thebe Magugu opening the event on Wednesday, 16 November. Following Thebe is VIVIERS Studio, Sindiso Khumalo, and MAXHOSA AFRICA. MMUSOMAXWELL will close the event on Sunday 20 November.
