Colour is deeply evocative and powerful. But, the use of toxic synthetic dyes is all too common in fashion and the treatment of wastewater is unregulated in many of the countries where textiles are produced, resulting in toxic rivers and high levels of cancer among the workers and their communities. In response to this, there has been growing interest in the return to the practice of natural dyeing. But, natural dyes are more than just a medium. They connect us to our past, present, and future and reconnect us with planetary systems in inextricable ways. From onion skins to fynbos, this discussion will focus on the growing use of natural dyes for textiles and fashion on a small and large scale.
