ZURI and IMANI

ZURI and IMANI is a surface pattern and textile design studio known for its contemporary take on African prints. After discovering that African wax cloth prints were not actually designed by Africans, the duo set out to change the narrative on African prints. ZURI and IMANI produce uniquely printed coats and scarves and license their designs for others to use.

Resources and materials

• Most pieces are made using cotton and viscose
• Fabric leftovers are upcycled into new garments
• Ankara designs are created to reclaim African authenticity

Making and manufacturing

• Uses a local printer to digitally print patterns, which uses less water and energy than traditional printing methods

Social and cultural

• Allows local designers to license their pattern designs

Product and design

• Designs are trans-seasonal and do not play into trends
• Textiles are only printed on order to prevent waste
• Coats are an oversized fit to cater to many body types

Packaging and distribution

• Fabric, apparel and scarves are packaged in reusable garment pouch string bags
