Mo-hey! is the knitwear branch of the lifestyle brand, Chommies. Each of their vibrant pieces is handknitted by a community of women using mohair, wool, and nylon for durability. The brand uses responsibly and locally sourced mohair and employs 22 women year-round.
Resources and materials
- Yarn is a blend of 78% mohair, 13% wool, and 9% nylon
- Mohair is sourced from Adele’s Mohair in the Karoo, which adheres to the Responsible Mohair Standards
- Only vinegar is used in the dyeing process; grey water is neutralised before returning to the soil
- Leftover yarn is reused for one-off pieces and donated for personal or charitable use
Making and manufacturing
- Garments are hand-knitted by 22 women working flexibly from home or the Chommies studio
- Knitters are paid per piece and provided with materials, equipment, and optional studio space
- Mohair is dyed using non-toxic methods, and all yarn is locally sourced and processed
- Studio provides battery lights, aprons, and subsidies for transport and meals
Social and cultural
- All knitters are women, aged 24–84
- Offers consistent work year-round, despite seasonal fluctuations, and flexible working conditions
